MORNING BRIEF
Morning Brief October 21 2026
A draft prospectus seen by the Wall Street Journal puts numbers on what Anthropic has promised Google, Amazon and Microsoft. Their backlogs are large enough to hold every dollar, and none of the three says whose it is. SpaceX's quarter, Musk's compute shortage, Super Micro's $4 billion and a chip index two days out of an eight-session route, all before the open.
Market research with receipts. Prices are Yahoo Finance chart data unless noted. “Premarket” means the last 1-minute extended-hours print against Tuesday’s (Oct 20) close. Times are ET. Paragraphs marked Desk note were added on the second pass this morning from the desk’s own reads, each with its feed and minute. Not investment advice.
TL;DR
- SpaceX crushed it and Musk talked merger. Q3 revenue $14.58B vs. $12.72B consensus (LSEG via CNBC); Q1 2027 revenue guide of $33–37B vs. $22.2B expected. Musk: “a lot of merit to combining” SpaceX and Tesla, but no deal terms agreed. SPCX +7.5% to $158.80 (7:36 AM).
- The AI trade is bid again. NQ futures +0.64%, ES +0.28% (Yahoo, 7:26 AM print). CRDO +6.7%, LITE +5.2%, AAOI +4.8%, COHR +4.4%, NBIS +3.6%, MU +3.1%, NVDA +2.2%. Super Micro +10.9% after raising its quarter guide to $18.5–19.5B.
- Anthropic’s new draft prospectus landed overnight: H1 2026 revenue ~$16.3B, an $80.7B H1 net loss (mostly a ~$72B non-cash convertible charge), and compute commitments that could reach $750B (WSJ, via Axios/Fortune). Still no public S-1 on EDGAR. The three hyperscaler contracts inside it total $252B, and all three suppliers’ June backlogs are big enough to hold them.
- After the bell: Netflix beat on EPS ($0.87 vs. $0.82) but guided Q4 light and cut its ad forecast, −6.8%. ISRG −5.7% on a narrowed procedure guide. COF +2.4% on a big beat. UAL slashed its Q4 guide on $4.80/gal fuel.
- Tonight: Tesla (5:30 PM ET call), Meta, IBM, Lam, TI. Thursday: MXL and Bloom Energy after the close, plus the Micron Taoyuan strike. No Fed speakers this week: the blackout runs to the Oct 27–28 meeting.
1. Musk on the SpaceX call: “Yankees playing in Little League”
Which Musk company reported? SpaceX, Tuesday after the close (call at 4:30 PM ET). Tesla has not reported yet. It posts Q3 results after today’s close, with its Q&A webcast at 5:30 PM ET (Tesla IR). TSLA is +1.5% premarket at $379.23.

The numbers (SpaceX release on SEC EDGAR, Oct 20):

Stock reaction: closed $147.79 Tuesday, rose ~6.6% after hours (Investing.com), now $158.80 (+7.5%) at 7:36 AM.
Desk note. The overnight readings on SpaceX disagree more than most: +2.35% at $151.26 on Benzinga at 5:55 PM, +9.3% on Newsquawk’s wrap, +10.39% on Benzinga at 6:03 AM, +7.35% at $158.65 on stockanalysis.com at 7:27. The $147.79 close is sworn on two feeds; none of the overnight prints is.
What Musk said (call transcript via Investing.com; merger quotes confirmed by WSJ and CNBC):
- On Tesla: “Both SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to discuss this idea, at the request of shareholders.” Then: “I think some people out there assume that a SpaceX and Tesla merger is a certainty, and I think that would be overstating it.” And: “the special committees have not reached agreement on the terms of any transaction... But I do think there is a lot of merit to combining the companies.” He flagged that Tesla would need a 50% vote of all shares, “quite a high hurdle.”
- On the real bottleneck: “the constraint on deployment of superintelligence is more in power and cooling and infrastructure than it is in chips.” His pitch for SpaceX doing it: “This is a bit like the New York Yankees playing in Little League.”
- On demand: “We are also, frankly, hounded relentlessly by every hyperscaler and by dozens of smaller companies to rent more of our compute. We could rent out our compute several times over if we said yes to everyone.”
- On scale: ~200,000 GB300s brought online per month, 2.5–3 GW by year-end, and “highly confident of 10 gigawatts incremental next year, so 13 total,” with a “not zero” shot at 20+ GW.
- On pricing: short-term contracts are renewing “at higher dollars per watt, not lower,” and old H100s are “renting for more than they rented when they were new.”
- The big swing: SpaceX ARR by end of 2027 “somewhere between $500 billion and $1 trillion.” Gwynne Shotwell’s response: “on that crazy note.”
- Terafab: first functional test chip targeted for “approximately May or June of next year,” volume production around Q3 2028, with “big error bars.”
CFO Bret Johnsen: new compute deployments have “a payback of less than a year” at current pricing, which is “tracking slightly above the high end of the $30–$50 per watt range.” SpaceX reiterated $100B in annualized revenue by December.
Why it matters for our names: This is the first big earnings-season data point that pushes back on last week’s “who pays for the build-out” fear. Truist called it the first data point “to support the bull case for AI cloud providers” (CNBC). Power names are bid too (BE +4.1%, VRT +6.4%). Stocktwits tied the energy-stock move to Musk’s power-and-cooling comment. The counterweight is capex. A $35–40B Q4 is roughly double Q3’s $19.6B, and funding is coming partly from debt.
Desk note. Read Musk’s compute paragraph against Anthropic’s draft (section 2) and they are mirror images. One company tells the SEC it “sought more capacity than hyperscalers were willing to supply” and is committing hundreds of billions to get it. The other tells analysts it has more demand than it will sell and would rather not sign long contracts at all, preferring spot rates and a “50-50, more or less” split between its own use and tenants. Both can be true. If both are true, the long-term price of compute is being set by whoever is more willing to commit, and that is the buyer. Also worth holding onto: The Motley Fool’s transcript has the monthly GB300 figure at 200,000 in one passage and 20,000 in another; Investing.com’s has 200,000. One of them misheard.
2. Anthropic’s S-1: the hype, the risks, and what’s new overnight
Where it stands: No public S-1. We checked SEC EDGAR full-text search at ~7:37 AM ET today and found no Anthropic, PBC registration statement. IFR reported Oct 15 a public filing around Oct 26. Renaissance Capital’s Matt Kennedy told Fortune a filing “could come out as soon as Friday.” Axios says the IPO is expected before Thanksgiving.
The hype (from our fact-checked Oct 20 piece, sources linked below):
- 2025 revenue ~$4.6B, up ~12x (Reuters).
- Q3 2026 revenue $16.8B, up 45% q/q (FT; Reuters), about $67B annualized.
- Adjusted profitability in Q2 and Q3 (FT).
The risks:
- 2025 operating loss of $8.06B (Reuters).
- At least $518B in cloud, compute and infrastructure obligations, ~80% non-cancellable (Reuters, Sept 28).
- Valuation: a >$2T target, with some investors now discussing ~$1.5T after Q3 (Reuters, Oct 15). One long-time investor told Fortune he expects pricing around $1.8T.
- Growth decel: from more than 2x q/q (Q1 to Q2) to 45% (Q2 to Q3).
New since yesterday:
- An updated draft prospectus (WSJ exclusive, Oct 20, via Axios and Fortune; Reuters via Calcalist): H1 2026 revenue ~$16.3B vs. $1.1B a year earlier, and an $80.7B H1 net loss, of which ~$72B is a non-cash charge on convertible notes (Reuters via Calcalist). H1 compute spend was nearly $9B vs. $2.3B a year ago.
- The bill got bigger: per WSJ (via Axios), Anthropic faces more than $600B in future infrastructure costs and is negotiating deals that could add ~$150B more, for up to $750B. Reuters (via Calcalist) still cites “at least $518B” over a decade. We read the gap as a newer, broader tally in the new draft, but the public S-1 needs to confirm it.
- Debt is getting pricier: Anthropic is offering Blackstone a yield above 10% on $9B of junior debt in a $60B chip-financing package, per the FT (via Axios), vs. 8.5% on an earlier deal.
Supplier winners (unchanged): AMZN (~$110B of commitments, plus Bedrock distribution and equity), GOOGL ($111.1B), AVGO ($125.2B TPU lease, up to $42B in financing). A bigger commitment number is more contracted demand for these three. It’s also more fixed cost for Anthropic. This morning: AMZN +0.3%, AVGO +0.9%, GOOGL −1.3%.
Desk addition: the five numbers, and where $252B has to show up
The commitment figures nest, and the press is printing them this morning as if they were one number. They are five, with five scopes and three dates:
| Figure | Scope | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| $252B | Three hyperscaler contracts: Google Cloud $111B, AWS $110B, Microsoft $31B | WSJ via Investing.com (3:47 PM Tue) and TradingKey (3:42 AM Wed) |
| ~$450B | All cloud agreements, 7–10 years, including the neoclouds | WSJ via Investing.com, Tue |
| $518B | Compute, cloud and infrastructure over a decade, ~80% non-cancellable | Reuters, Sept 28; repeated Oct 15 |
| >$600B | Locked-in commitments as of this week | TradingKey, Wed 3:42 AM; Axios’ reading of WSJ |
| up to $750B | Locked-in plus ~$150B still in talks | WSJ via Axios and Investing.com |
A reader who sees $450B and $518B on the same morning is looking at two cuts of one schedule, not a disagreement between outlets. The narrowest cut is the only one that can be checked against a supplier’s own filed document, so that is the one to check.

Alphabet’s second-quarter 10-Q says the company had “$519.5 billion of remaining performance obligations,” “of which $513.9 billion related to Google Cloud,” and expects “just over 50%” of it as revenue within 24 months. Amazon put AWS’s backlog at $496B at the same date. Microsoft’s commercial remaining performance obligation was $678B at June 30, about 30% due within twelve months. Our division: Anthropic’s $111B would be 21.6% of Google Cloud’s backlog, its $110B 22.2% of Amazon’s, its $31B 4.6% of Microsoft’s. One customer, a fifth of each of the two largest contracted books in the industry.
Whether it did show up is what the documents do not settle. Neither Alphabet’s 10-Q nor Amazon’s release names a customer, and whether the contracts were executed before June 30 is not stated anywhere we read. Microsoft already separates its backlog growth with and without OpenAI (84% with, 25% without). If one of the other two starts doing the same when the third-quarter reports land over the next two weeks, that is the disclosure Anthropic’s draft has made necessary. Two smaller places the number does show up: Nscale’s own listing prospectus values its Anthropic agreements at up to $44.6B (Bloomberg via The Next Web), against the draft’s “up to $86B” for Nscale and Lambda together; and Bloomberg and CNBC reported Tuesday that Anthropic is in talks for a second $45B, six-year lease of a second 460 MW building at Nscale’s Monarch campus in West Virginia, built for Vera Rubin, after Microsoft dropped its plan to be the main tenant there.
Disclosure: this desk’s tooling is built on Claude, made by Anthropic. Everything in this section is reported from published documents and from feeds stamped to the minute.
3. After the bell and overnight: the headlines
- Netflix (NFLX) −6.8% to $64.02. Q3 EPS $0.87 vs. $0.82 (LSEG). Revenue $12.87B, +11.8%, in line with the $12.87B estimate and the slowest growth in nearly three years. Q4 guide: EPS $0.67 vs. $0.73 est., net income $2.79B vs. $3.07B est. The 2026 ad forecast was cut to ~$2.7B from ~$3B. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos: “I know that we could do better.” (Reuters; AP)
- Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) −5.7% to $413.00. Beat: adj. EPS $3.00 vs. $2.64, revenue $3.05B (+22%) vs. $2.91B (LSEG via Reuters). But it only narrowed 2026 da Vinci procedure growth to 14–15% from 13.5–15.5%, same midpoint (IBD). It also took a $450M antitrust settlement charge (company release).
- Capital One (COF) +2.4% to $206.43. Adj. EPS $6.69 vs. $5.50, revenue $16.3B vs. $16.25B. NIM up 40 bp to 8.41%, plus a $225M reserve release (company release; Investing.com).
- Chubb (CB). Record core operating EPS $7.66 vs. $6.53 (Zacks via AP). P&C combined ratio 84.1%, net premiums written $15.1B (+1.9%) (company release). No Yahoo premarket print yet.
- United Airlines (UAL) −1.2% to $96.60. Q3 adj. EPS $2.54 vs. $2.57, revenue $17.88B vs. $17.9B (LSEG). Q4 guide of $0.50–1.50 vs. $1.76 est., with fuel assumed at $4.80/gal vs. $3.90 in Q3. That puts full-year EPS at no more than $7.22, vs. July’s $9–11 guide (CNBC).
- Pegasystems (PEGA) −3.3% to $35.03. Total ACV +6% (+7% cc) to $1.653B, Pega Cloud ACV +20%. The CFO blamed “go-to-market execution challenges” (company release).
- Super Micro (SMCI) +10.9% to $36.02. Raised its fiscal Q1 revenue guide to $18.5–19.5B from $14.5–15.5B (Street ~$15B), with gross margin of 12.0–12.5%. Full results come Nov 3 (Reuters; Business Times). DELL +5.5%, HPE +4.7% in sympathy.
- This morning: AT&T beat (adj. EPS $0.65 vs. $0.60, revenue $32.3B vs. $31.69B) and raised 2026 EPS to ~$2.40, but T is −3.9% (Investing.com). Abbott reaffirmed its full-year EPS guide, and ABT is −3.0% (PR Newswire).
Macro and AI:
- Micron update: Micron and its Taichung union signed an agreement and withdrew from the Oct 22 mediation. Terms weren’t disclosed (Reuters via MarketScreener; Taipei Times). That was the site with ~11,000 union members. The Taoyuan union’s one-day warning strike on Thu, Oct 22 is still on (Mint; TipRanks). MU +3.1%.
- Oil: Brent $109.87 (+1.0%) and Dec WTI $98.90 (+1.1%) (CNBC, 7:25 AM). Brent is near a five-month high (Reuters). Iran’s foreign minister said the Strait of Hormuz stays closed until Washington accepts its conditions (Stocktwits via Yahoo Finance).
- Fed: the FOMC meets next week (Oct 27–28). Reuters says last week’s inflation data supported “the case for another interest rate hike.” FXStreet cites ~85% odds of a hold. 10-yr at 5.106% (−1.1 bp, CNBC 7:35 AM).
- Korea rebounded: KOSPI 5,735.66 (+3.3%) after Tuesday’s Elice-driven 3.7% drop (Yahoo).
Desk note on oil. The WTI front month rolled on Tuesday. November expired at $101.79, down $1.87 (Seoul Economic Daily, one feed); December, now the front, settled at $97.82, down 72 cents (Newsquawk), and this morning’s $98.90 is +1.1% on that base. Any screen showing WTI “down $4” today is showing the roll, not a fall. December Brent settled $108.79 (three feeds) after touching $111.99, a five-month high. On Korea: the Kospi’s close is 5,735.66 on the Korea JoongAng Daily and the AP, Samsung +5.67% to 223,500 won, SK hynix +5.81% to 1,294,000, foreigners net buyers of 659.96bn won; the Nikkei closed 64,621.24 (+0.85%), Hong Kong −0.7%, Shanghai −0.6%. The memory makers were bought back; the Chinese internet names were not. On the Fed: the Board’s blackout is in force, so there are no speakers this week; the election is Nov 3, six days after the decision; the meeting after is Dec 8–9.

Source: Yahoo Finance daily closes. Premarket column is from Tuesday’s brief (~7:39–7:49 AM ET).
- What we said: Friday’s close on the chip ETFs was the line in the sand. It held. SOXX closed $500.01 vs. Friday’s $493.39, and SOX closed 11,283.81 vs. Friday’s 11,137.29.
- What we got wrong: the premarket selling was overdone. CRWV, NBIS and MRVL flipped from −3% to −5% premarket to green closes. The Dow ripped +1.0% on healthcare (Reuters).
- What stuck: IREN (−4.0%) and LRCX (−3.2%) closed as weak as, or weaker than, they looked premarket.

Watch list / setups (opinion, not advice)
- Optics (CRDO, LITE, AAOI, COHR): the highest beta in both directions again. Up 4–7% premarket on Musk’s demand comments. MXL Thursday is the next read-through.
- Neoclouds (CRWV, NBIS): Truist says SpaceX’s pricing commentary supports them. Last week’s credit worries haven’t gone away, though. Anthropic is paying >10% on junior debt (FT via Axios). CoreWeave’s 2031 bonds yielded above 16% last week and ~15.1% Monday (Coinpaper, unsworn); Goldman moved it to Buy Monday, target $106 to $139.
- MU ($923.50): Taichung’s deal removes the bigger overhang. Taoyuan’s strike Thursday is a one-day warning, not an open-ended walkout.
- Power (BE, VRT): riding Musk’s “power and cooling” line. BE reports Thursday after the close.
- Tonight is the real test: META capex (previews run as high as $145B for 2026, Coinpaper, one source) and Tesla’s take on the merger talk.
SpaceX handed the AI bulls their best receipt of earnings season so far: demand Musk says he can’t fill, payback under a year, and a Q1 guide about 58% above the Street at the midpoint. That flips the chip tape green into a META/TSLA night where capex and merger talk decide whether it sticks.

Receipts check: unconfirmed or conflicting
- SpaceX EPS consensus varies: ~$0.13 (Investing.com), ~$0.15 adj. (previews). Seeking Alpha shows EPS of $0.45. The SEC release shows GAAP diluted EPS of $0.35, which is the figure we use.
- Musk call quotes come from an Investing.com transcript (AI-assisted, editor-reviewed). The merger quote is confirmed by WSJ and CNBC. The others are single-source until the official replay or transcript. The Motley Fool’s transcript carries the same merger and constraint quotes.
- Anthropic’s $750B / >$600B commitments and H1 figures come from a draft prospectus seen by WSJ and Reuters, not a public filing. Reuters still cites “at least $518B.” The five-figure table above is the desk’s reconciliation, not any outlet’s.
- Netflix revenue: one Reuters version printed $13.44B. AP (FactSet) and the Reuters version on StreetInsider say $12.87B, which we use. Separately, both of Newsquawk’s European opening notes this morning give Netflix Q3 revenue as $14.6B against $12.87B expected; $14.6B is SpaceX’s revenue from the same evening, carried on the same pages under SpaceX’s name. Logged as Decoy Chronicle entry 229.
- Hormuz comments and the LITE target change come from Stocktwits via Yahoo and are not independently verified. Fed odds are from FXStreet, not checked against CME FedWatch.
- META/IBM/LRCX/TXN timing tonight is from weekly calendars, not each company’s IR. CB had no premarket print on Yahoo.
- Premarket prices differ by minute across feeds: NFLX is $64.02 (−6.8%) on Yahoo at ~7:34 and $64.16 (−6.59%) on stockanalysis.com at 7:24; SPCX $158.80 vs. $158.65 at 7:27; NVDA $221.13 vs. $221.32 at 7:34. Differences, not errors.
The Decoy Chronicle — every entry, dated and sourced — is published as a standing register and updated with each issue. It stands at 226 this morning.
The TrendyVest Championship is open for registration at Tournament.Trendyvest.com — 500 seats, a $100,000 simulated stake, free to enter. Trading began October 1 at the market open.
TrendyVest is an independent research practice. This is analysis and editorial opinion, not investment advice, and nothing here is a recommendation that any particular person buy or sell any security. Figures identified as this desk’s arithmetic are the practice’s own, and the inputs are printed alongside them.
